About Us
What exactly is Southover Good Neighbours?
It’s a way of putting neighbours in touch with each other when they need a bit of help with something.
It may be when you are unwell and need a bit of help with shopping, walking the dog, collection of prescriptions, putting out bins, collecting a library book.
Sometimes we are away and we would like someone to water the plants, pick in the mail, put out the bins or feed the cat.
It could be you need another pair of hands: for example, moving some furniture, holding a ladder, sorting a flat pack out or jump starting your car.
Often sharing or borrowing an item that may be only used once, may be better than buying e.g. a high chair when a toddler comes to stay, the single use of a power drill.
There may be skills we are happy to share in some circumstances: writing a letter or following instructions; basic IT skills such as signing on to zoom.
In addition, SGN acts as a signpost to other services and community groups. We aim to connect people with government and voluntary bodies, and to draw on the services of other neighbouring community groups. This is particularly important in times of emergency such as we have experienced during Covid 19. We aim to connect the community together during such times.
We do not offer transport, but will direct people to local public and voluntary transport services
Who is it for? It is for all residents of Southover to use (from Rotten Row in the North, end of Priory Street in the East, top of Bell lane in the West, the Railway in the South). This includes volunteers who have registered to use it themselves.
Who are the volunteers? We are all residents of Southover who are happy to be asked for help. All volunteers have been DBS checked - your security is our security.
How is it funded? We are funded by a grant from Lewes Town Council
How does it work? A small group of phone holders take it in turn to hold the phone and receive calls. They will answer your call, then Email the volunteers with your request. All users will need to register if they have not used the scheme before. This will be done following your first phone call to the scheme.
